What to Wear for Fall Portraits

Getting a fall portrait is simpler than you think.

Wearing comfortable clothes and accessories will help you feel your best. Fall colors and warm clothes will help you look your best. Before you go to a session, pose like a model for practice (this is hard for us normal people). You may be more aware of yourself during the session and more relaxed in front of the camera.  Depending on where we take the photos, I will help with posing, so don’t worry about this too much.

When dressing for a photo shoot you want to look your best because the photos will be on display for years to come and it's better to look good in photos than bad. Don't wear anything too baggy unless you have a defined figure, through the chest and through the thigh are major places that can be hidden or enhanced based on what's covering them up. Dressing for a portrait means dressing for success so watch what you wear!

Although we all want a unique and trendy look we still want to stay true to our culture and ourselves. Fashion is a way of expressing who we are and where we are.  Choose the clothing you typically wear if you are dressing up a bit to go out on a date, out to eat, or to a holiday event.

One part of a portrait session you will most remember is the fall colors and various leaves. Be sure to have appropriate fall colors on all members of the family from head to toe, including their clothing, socks, shoes, and even accessories and backdrops.  Using similar color families, solids with no busy patterns, and textured fabrics are fun.  Choose earth tones and jewel tones for fall.  Hat, boots, plaid, and scarves are fun accessories.

Hopefully, these tips will help you dress appropriately for your next portraiture session. Remember: comfort and color value are always the best choices, meaning you should wear what makes you feel good. Always make sure that your clothing complements your body type and features. Be unique, but not something that's radical.

The most important thing is to keep it simple. Don't overwhelm your family with something too fancy or too busy that they feel unnatural and can't succeed in.
